Some screen actors have talents other than acting—singing, dancing. Reasons Why 'Asylum' is the Best . Ryan Murphy is known for starting his seasons off strongly, only for them to go into a tailspin around the midway point of the season. In the case of American Horror Story, he started off the series strongly with Murder House, achieved some of his best work with Asylum, hit rock bottom with Coven and slowly began to dig himself out of the hole he made with Freakshow, which was an improvement over Coven, but only slightly. Not many people seem to share this viewpoint. In fact, Coven seems to be many people’s favorite season of American Horror Story, whereas Asylum (and occasionally Freakshow) is thought to be the worst season. I’m not one to use profanity in my posts, but there’s only one way for me to say this: I fucking hate Coven. Asylum is the best season and Coven is the worst, and I’m here to tell you why. Asylum. Strong Villains. Bloody Face, Dr. Arden and the possessed Sister Mary Eunice are all more than just your standard two- dimensional villains. They all get enough screen time to make you care about them (even if that caring means wanting to see them die horrible deaths). They each had unique M. O. s and made strong, lasting impressions. A horror movie (or show) is only as good as its villain, and Asylum delivered. Developed Characters. This is sort of an extension of my first point, but the characters in Asylum were not caricatures. These were real people with developed plot lines (well, except for Chlo. Lange may get all the accolades (and Sister Jude has a great arc in the season as well), but Paulson’s Lana Winters was the centerpiece of the season, and she nailed the performance in every scene. From her incarceration to her aversion therapy to her cathartic murder of her son, Lana is the best character to come out of any season of AHS. Strong, Cohesive Narrative. Asylum had the most cohesive narrative throughout the entirety of its 1. For juggling so many things (possession, aliens, a serial killer, Nazi mutation experiments, asylum inmates, among other things), Asylum holds itself together remarkably well. The Anne Frank Halloween episodes are two of the strongest episodes the series has ever done, and they fit into the plot of the story. Nearly every plot line seemed relevant to the season as a whole, which cannot be said of any of the other seasons. The Conclusion is (Mostly) Satisfying. American Horror Story has had a problem sticking the landing each and every season. This is no exception for Asylum, but it is undoubtedly the strongest finale of the bunch. Many weren’t fans of the flash- forward storytelling device used for the final episode, but Asylum was always about Lana and her journey toward peace. The show needed to jump forward to give her that peace. Kit ends up taking in Sister Jude and taking care of her until she dies, and he is abducted by aliens after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Lana kills Dr. Thredson (aka Bloody Face), Alma is admitted to Briarcliff. It all sounds sloppy, but the execution is nearly flawless. It. From the human experimentations done by James Cromwell’s Dr. Arden, to the possession of Sister Mary Eunice (Lily Rabe), Asylum pulled no punches. The only real moment of levity was the musical number in episode 1. Asylum was a bleak, unforgiving season, that turned off many viewers (and is the main reason why Murphy turned to camp in Coven). This always confused me, because it seems as if people who are watching American Horror Story don’t want to see any actual horror. Coven. As for Coven, aka the season that pandered to the gays, there have been plenty of articles written about the mess of a season it was. These are just some of my biggest issues with it: UPDATE: After reading some of the comments I feel the need to explain the above statement. When I say “pandering to the gays,” that is not an insult to gay people (of which I am one), but rather an insult to Coven and the team behind it. As I watched Coven, it seemed like Murphy’s thought process was “let’s fill the show with bitchy queens and sassy one- liners” in lieu of a coherent plot, as if that is going to make the show for us and forgive it its shortcomings. I felt insulted by the fact that the creative team behind the show thought that that is all I wanted to see. I felt pandered to, and to be pandered to is insulting. That was my reasoning behind that statement. No Direction. If you go back and watch all 1. Coven, there doesn’t seem to be any consistency with the narrative. It really feels like the writers made it up as they went along. A simple outline of the season would have gone a long way in ensuring Coven’s cohesiveness. Alas, it’s clear no outline was made. Inconsistent Characters. This is probably my biggest issue with Coven. None of the characters in the season felt like real characters because they did things their character would never do. Kathy Bates’ Madame La. Laurie began a redemptive arc with Gabourey Sidibe’s Queenie and just. Don’t forget about the fact that Jessica Lange’s Fiona was a murderer and no one seemed to care. Cordelia’s forgiveness of Fiona in the finale didn’t feel like something Cordelia would actually do. Queenie leaving the girls at Miss Robichaux’s for Marie Laveau’s voodoo team also didn’t make much sense. The show seemed to imply that it was just a race thing, but there was not enough screen time devoted to Queenie’s scenes with Laveau to make her betrayal convincing. Emma Roberts’ Madison Montgomery and Sarah Paulson’s Cordelia were probably the only consistently written character throughout the entire season. It Was Overstuffed Yet Storylines Were Left Hanging. What were the repercussions of Queenie having sex with a minotour? What happened to Madame La. Laurie’s redemption arc (as mentioned above)? People always complain about Asylum having one too many plot lines (though I’ll admit that the aliens were superfluous), but Coven is the real culprit here. What was the point of bringing in Patti Lupone’s character and her son? Why was Stevie Nicks even there (other than fan service)? The witch hunters were brought in and dispatched rather quickly. Cordelia didn’t seem to care much about the fact that her husband was a witch hunter. And remember when Zoe and Kyle skipped town, only to just come back in the beginning of the next episode for no particular reason? It’s all pretty sloppy screenwriting. No Stakes. Just when you thought Coven was pulling the rug out from under you by killing a main character off early in the season (Evan Peters, Emma Roberts), they were resurrected. Death was never a permanent fixture in Coven, which made it really hard to care or worry about any of the characters. If you can’t care about the characters (praising their bitchiness and wittiness doesn’t count as caring about them), then there is nothing but a hollow shell of a show. Also, the endgame being the reveal of the new Supreme was not compelling at all. If that was the whole purpose of the season, it’s boring. Unearned Endings. The biggest offender of this is arguably Lily Rabe’s Misty Day. Her fate in the finale “The Seven Wonders,” where she is trapped in Hell for all eternity to dissect frogs, doesn’t hold much weight for us as viewers. Sure, she was one of the most likable characters of the season, but we really didn’t know anything about her other than that she really liked Stevie Nicks. Having her own personal Hell be dissecting frogs felt too predictable and like an easy narrative out. The endgame for the season was always going to be to have Cordelia be the new Supreme, so they just needed a way to dispatch Misty. Her fate would have been better suited to Roberts’ Madison Montgomery, who gets an “easy” death via strangulation by Peters’ character. No character had more of an unearned ending than Fiona though. She was a despicable, selfish human being and a murderer, but the show gave her a redemptive arc (in the last episode). We shouldn’t want to see this woman gain her daughter’s sympathy. Coven was trying to subvert expectations, and I get that, but it came off as cheap and unearned. What do you think? Am I being too hard on Coven (or too forgiving of Asylum)? The Latin word for the occult is occultus, which means something that is hidden or concealed secretly. The common English usage of the word has come to be referred to as the “knowledge of the paranormal,” versus something that can be measured . So it is considered to be something that is present that cannot be readily described or explained by what we know as the natural sciences, such as physics and chemistry. The modern definitions describe it as the belief and practice of something that is supernatural, mystical, magical, or paranormal; this includes magic, black magic, witchcraft, sorcery, wizardry, necromancy, devil worship, Satanism, voodoo, mysticism, and various other unexplainable sources. These beliefs and practices are nothing new and have been around for thousands of years, for as long as society has had some sort of religious beliefs these other sources have existed. Through the many centuries there has been hysteria and punishment for what is different and not understood, usually related to the specific religious order that was dominant at that time. The act of conducting witch- hunts and trials because of societal panic and upheaval has existed since well before it peaked in Europe, beginning in the 1. Women were tortured, burned at the stake, or hung because of fear that they were practicing Satanism and witchery, including in the Americas with the Salem witch trials during 1. Occultism in film has varied throughout cinematic history. While there are instances of the themes being used before the 1. Between the 1. 95. The success of films such as Rosemary’s Baby, The Wicker Man, The Omen, and The Exorcist further cemented the desire of the audience to see themes that would shock or scare them. Popularity of the horror genre has continued to grow and resulted in franchises being created that deal with the occult and demonic themes, such as Paranormal Activity, Blair Witch Project, and The Conjuring. There was also the return of the popular cult franchise Evil Dead, with a television show titled Ash vs. The Evil Dead. This list contains a mix of movies that are considered a cult film for a combination of reasons; they are exploitative and controversial, they did poorly at the box office but have a strong following, they are weird and unusual, they are cheap and campy, and some are somewhere in the middle. Haxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages (1. This is a Swedish- Danish produced silent film that is meant to be considered a documentary examining the history and evolution of witchcraft, from its pagan roots through to the hysteria that took place in modernized Europe. It is shown through a series of vignettes that mix videos with old illustrations and paintings, which include depictions of demons, witches, and Satan performing various acts. The video vignettes include scenes of witches eating flesh and making love potions, putting spells on men, a group of men performing a ritual on a dead body, multiple appearances of Satan, the Sabbath featuring witches and various demons, witch hunts, and inquisition torture. It then wraps up in the 1. It has a mixture of spooky, unusual, and comedic elements. There are multiple versions of the film available that have been released. A 7. 6- minute version was released and re- titled in 1. Witchcraft Through the Ages, narrated by William S. Burroughs and featuring a soundtrack by Jean- Luc Ponty and Daniel Humair. Criterion released a 1. DVD, featuring the original score performed by the Czech Film Orchestra. The 1. 96. 8 version is just great, with the growling and distinct voice of Burroughs narrating the film and the frenetic jazzy beatnik score from Ponty and Humair. Burroughs is a noted novelist and poet associated with the Beat generation, best known for his novel Naked Lunch. It is a difficult film to explain because it falls somewhere between serious and downright campy. The scenes involving the devil can be described as being hilarious or scary depending on your personal viewpoint. They are reminiscent of the cult film The Forbidden Zone. There is a pretty memorable scene involving the Sabbath, it’s a huge party with witches, demons, a horse skeleton, Satan, and everyone kissing Satan’s ass at the end. There is also a Benny Hill type scene where a sex crazed monk is chasing a maiden around. The film is relevant because it was the first film that dealt with witches and witchcraft, while also trying to present it in a factual and historical manner. It has a cult following for both versions among fans of silent films, witchcraft, horror films, and Burroughs fans. If you enjoy any of those, then you should check this out. The Undead (1. 95. Terror. A woman is put into a psychical trance and sent back through time into the body of one of her medieval ancestors, who is condemned to die as a witch. She escapes and a real witch named Livia (Allison Hayes), who works with the Devil, wants her dead so that she can have her boyfriend. There is also another good witch, an imp that works for Livia, a singing gravedigger, and one of the psychics that travels back in time with her. Produced and directed by Roger Corman, this is an unusual and fun B- movie that is a mix of horror, violence, reincarnation, time travel, comedy, and campy fun. There is amusing elements with the witch and imp turning into various animals, most notably a pair of very fake looking bats. The gravedigger is also fun with his songs, rhymes and witty dialogue, such as when he calls the graveyard his “flesh farm.” The devil is great, with his constant laughing and very large pitchfork. On the Sabbath, he summons a trio of dead girls to rise from the grave and do a dance. The film is most notable for the appearance of actress Hayes and her very tight dress and heaving breasts. Hayes was a very well known B- movie actress of the 1. Attack of the 5. 0 Foot Woman. The film was shot over six days on a budget of $7. If you like any of those, then you should check this out. If you enjoy this film, you may also like The Mole People, Attack of the Crab Monsters, The Leach Woman, The Deadly Mantis, and Premature Burial. Curse of the Demon AKA Night of the Demon (1. Horror! Most terrifying story the screen has ever told!” . Paranormal Psychologist Dr. John Holden (Dana Andrews) travels to England in order to investigate and disprove the existence of Satanism and its use by the devil cult leader Dr. Julian Karswell (Niall Macginnis). Holden is supposed to meet with several other Professors, primarily Professor Harrington. When he arrives he discovers that Harrington has been killed when he crashed his car into an electrical pole and electrocuted himself. Holden does not know that a demon that Karswell conjured had actually killed him. Holden meets with Karswell and he slips him a parchment that is a death curse, a fire demon used to destroy enemies. Holden also meets Joanna Harrington (Peggy Cummins), the dead professor’s niece, and they investigate the details regarding her uncle’s death and whether the paranormal elements are real. A series of strange occurrences eventually lead Holden to believe that he must pass the parchment back within two days in order to break the curse. This is a top class British produced psychological thriller with a great cast and script that focuses more on the mood and suggestion as opposed to graphic horror scenes. The three main actors are all excellent in their respective characters. Andrews plays the skeptical professor who only believes in logic and what can be seen and shown to him, finally believing in the demonic curse and witchcraft before it is too late. Macginnis is absolutely amazing as Karswell, playing the evil cult leader as mostly calm and unassuming. He’s confident and wants Holden to know that the witchcraft is real, giving several demonstrations of his powers throughout the film. He rarely appears menacing in the film and that is the brilliance of his portrayal of the bad guy. His character is supposed to be a representation of real life Satanist Aleister Crowley, including the pointy goatee . Cummins is also good in her role, playing the role of the believer trying to convince Holden that something evil is going on and that he’s in danger. There are two versions of this movie. The British release is called Night of the Demon and had a running time of 9. American version was released as Curse of the Demon and had a running time of 8. There were a lot of production issues between the director and producer, most notably whether or not to show the actual demon on screen. Most of the demon shots were done after the director was done with the production. In an interview from director Jacques Tourneur, he said that “The scenes in which you really see the demon were shot without me. All except one. I shot the sequence in the woods where Dana Andrews is chased by a sort of cloud. This technique should have been used for other sequences. The audience should never have completely seen the demon. Black Sunday (1. 96. In 1. 63. 0 Moldavia, the witches Asa Vajda (Barbara Steele) and Javuto are sentenced to death by Asa’s brother and the inquisition. She puts a curse on her ancestors and vows to return and avenge her death. She is tortured, branded with the letter “S” for Satan, and has an iron mask nailed to her face. She is buried in a casket with a glass panel and a cross on the outside, to prevent her from escaping. Two hundred years later she rises back from the dead, when a pair of doctors discovers the tomb and accidently break the cross and glass panel. One of the doctors cuts himself on the glass and his blood regenerates the witch. She summons Javuto with the plan of draining the blood of her relative, Princess Katia (also played by Steele), in order to gain immortality. This is an Italian produced gothic horror that is considered to be one of the great masterpieces of horror cinema. It uses a mix of atmosphere, sound, gore, and its gothic surroundings to create a creepy horror film.
